The National Psoriasis Foundation Research Program funds and promotes research into psoriatic disease and related comorbidities, under NPF's mission of finding a cure for psoriatic disease and improving the lives of those affected.

We choose our research projects not only for their potential to yield information that may help treat psoriatic disease, but also to answer basic questions about the underlying disease mechanisms, comorbidities, and public health.  Applications undergo a rigorous scientific peer-review by a panel of experts and are then selected for funding based on patient input and Foundation priorities.

This year the Foundation is offering six different research grant opportunities:

  • Discovery Grants allow researchers to undertake preliminary and "proof-of-concept" studies. The goal is to help researchers develop competitive grant proposals that will lead to long-term funding from the National Institutes of Health or other federal agencies.
  • Translational Research Grants focus on helping scientific discoveries from clinical, laboratory or population-based studies move rapidly into treatments that have a clear benefit for patients with psoriatic disease.

  • Early Career Research Grants support graduate students and postdoctoral researchers training to conduct psoriatic disease research independently. The goal is to put recipients in a position to compete for larger grants in the future and be in a strong position to establish successful long-term careers.

  • Bridge Grants will support researchers who have submitted meritorious but unsuccessful K- and R- applications to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) with a focus on psoriatic disease or related comorbidities.  Through this special opportunity, NPF intends to provide a critical year of additional support to near-miss applicants so that they can collect data to strengthen a future application.  Applicants may request up to $50,000 for K-bridge or $100,000 for R-bridge for one year.
  • Public Health Challenge Grant will support research that uses existing data sources to address questions related to the public health of psoriatic disease. Priority will be given to applications that address research areas identified in the CDC Public Health Agenda for Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis.  Applicants may request up to $75,000 for one year.

  • Psoriatic Arthritis Research Grant In a special collaboration with the Arthritis National Research Foundation (ANRF), the NPF and ANRF jointly fund one translational research project focused specifically on psoriatic arthritis. Applicants may request up to $100,000 per year for one year. A second year may be granted pending the outcome of a competitive review at the end of year one.
