The world’s first model of immunized human skin produced by 3D bioprinting allows the development of an innovative cold plasma wound healing treatment for severe infected burns.

  • As part of a collaboration between the French Army Biomedical Research Insitute, CTBIOTECH™, École Polytechnique, and Institut Pasteur : CTISkin™ immunized human skin, produced by 3D bioprinting, is enabling the development of an innovative treatment for the management of infected burns.

  • The NOVOPLASM consortium is the first in the world to develop cold plasma technology for the treatment of infected burns and the wound healing of skin grafts.

  • These innovations promoting wound healing and tissue repair processes will be presented at the Defense Innovation Forum 2021 of the French Ministry of the Armed Forces from November 25 to 27, 2021, in Paris.

Burns are a major public health issue and the fourth most common cause of injury worldwide. The World Health Organization estimates that every day nearly 30,000 people suffer burns that require medical attention - 11 million patients per year worldwide. Nearly 5 billion people do not have access to medical care for acute burns caused by fires, chemical and industrial accidents or armed conflicts, resulting in death, disability, lifelong disfigurement, poverty and social isolation.

The NOVOPLASM research consortium is a collaboration between the École Polytechnique, French Army Biomedical Research Insitute, the Institut Pasteur and CTIBIOTECH™ to develop an innovative cold plasma-based treatment to improve the management of skin infections in severe burns, while promoting wound healing and tissue repair processes. The final medical device will be suitable for use either in a hospital setting or in a specialized burn treatment center.
