Objectives

The research program of VirPatH focuses on influenza virus emergence and re-emergence, pathogenesis and host-virus relationships. Our research program analyses: (1) the role of the newly discovered interplay between the 5’ termini and 3’ termini of gene segments for both encapsidation and genetic reassortment, (2) the host-cell relationship, including cellular metabolic pathways like ribosomal biogenesis during viral replication and host factors involved in viral expression. (3) the disregulation of the immune response observed during the influenza infection in link with host receptors and proteins specifically activated. We shall further analyze their role in severe influenza, and for the facilitation of bacterial superinfection (mainly with Staphylococcus aureus), by using different virus models. With close imput from the surveillance carried out through the National reference center and the international network of NIC involved in this surveillance activities, we have a direct access in real time to relevant viruses for the understanding of influenza pathogenesis.
