The UMR 5557 is a joint research institute in microbial ecology from CNRS, Université Lyon 1, VetAgro Sup and INRA. It gathers more than 120 research personal focusing on the analysis of microorganisms, their diversity, their interactions with the environment (soils, water, etc.) and hosts (plants, animals, humans).

Research deals with bacteria, fungi and viruses in the following topics:

- Genomics of microorganisms and microbial communities

- Survival and dissemination of pathogenic microorganisms in the environment

- Microbial interactions and their effects on plants, animals and human beings.

- Health ecology

- Biodiversity and evolution of microorganisms

- Microbial functioning of microorganisms in their environment and impact on ecosystem functioning

- Ecotoxicology and environmental quality

By combining mechanistic and ecological approaches, the UMR 5557 Microbial Ecology has developed advanced tools in molecular biology, environmental genomics and chemistry of natural compounds. Research is both basic and applied, in relation with the industry (contracts, patents, etc.), in the fields of agronomy, health and bio-industries.
